The Painted Veil is a film based on Somerset Maugham's classic novel of the same name. Set in the 1920s, it tells the story of a love affair between a young British couple: Kitty, an upper-class woman, and Walter, a middle-class doctor. The two get married for the wrong reasons and travel to Shanghai, where Kitty falls in love with someone else. When Walter discovers his wife's infidelity, he seeks revenge by accepting a job offer in a remote town in China plagued by a deadly epidemic, taking Kitty with him. Through this journey, their relationship gains meaning, and they find a shared purpose in one of the world's most distant but beautiful corners.
Kitty, a young lady belonging to London's upper class, is approaching the suitable age for marriage. For her mother, who values high society excessively, Kitty not getting married would be both highly inappropriate and embarrassing. Tired of the privileged lifestyle, Kitty accepts a marriage proposal from Dr. Walter Fane, a serious bacteriologist. The young couple moves to Shanghai.
In this peculiar city, which is becoming the center of China's popular culture, political intrigue, and immorality, the Fane couple becomes part of the British colony community and meets Charles Townsend, the Assistant British Consul. While Walter dedicates himself to his work and his new wife, Kitty cheats on her husband with Charlie.

After their arrival in the village of Mei-tan-fu, the Fane couple's disconnected and cold relationship continues.
