Robin Hood (Kevin Costner), a member of King Richard's crusade, is captured and imprisoned in Jerusalem. Upon learning of his impending execution, Robin plans his escape and saves the life of a Muslim prisoner named Azeem (Morgan Freeman). Grateful for his rescue, Azeem vows to stay by Robin's side as they return to England. However, upon their arrival, Robin discovers his ancestral home, Locksley Castle, in ruins. His father, Lord Locksley, has been executed on false accusations by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin also finds Duncan, a blinded servant who managed to survive torture, and learns about the Sheriff and his witch. Meanwhile, the Sheriff's men are in pursuit of Robin. In light of these events, Robin, Azeem, and Duncan leave Locksley lands. Robin is immediately drawn to Marian, the cousin of the King, but the Sheriff is determined to keep her under his control. Seeking the truth about his father's accusations, Robin confronts the Bishop and comes face-to-face with the Sheriff. Escaping Nottingham's soldiers, they seek refuge in Sherwood Forest, where Robin takes on the moniker of Robin Hood.
